A lot of language teachers plan their lessons based on themes or topics, and a lot of textbooks on the market now are theme-based. When teaching a theme-based lesson, I often warm my students up with pair question sheets. They're very simple - just four questions about the theme of the lesson for Partner A, and four different questions for Partner B (and at the bottom of the page a space for the students to write their own questions). The students take turns asking the questions on their sheets and writing down their partners' answers. Also, as much as possible, instead of just noting down their partners' answers and going on to the next question, students should try to ask follow-up questions.
